I am planning out some covers for basement egress window wells in my backyard, essentially they are 4' x 5' brick-lined pits. I would like to fabricate something using expanded sheet but do not know what guage/strand thickness I might need to ensure that it doesnt fail if somebody happens to walk or fall onto it.

It wouldn't be 100% metalworking, I would probably fix the sheet to a nice stained wooden frame.
