As a lightweight and moldable option that comes in a range of beautiful colors and shapes, I love suggesting PET felt for on-the-fly alterations or for someone who wants a really modern solution with designer appeal.

Please visit our website for more information on this topic.

In this article, I’ll give you the basics on what PET felt is and how it’s made. I’ll also discuss some benefits and misconceptions and share some of the best PET acoustic panel solutions for your property. In the end, you should have a good idea of whether PET acoustic panels are the right choice for you.

What is PET Felt?

PET felt is an eco-friendly synthetic felt material made from post-consumer recycled bottles. It’s strong yet soft, lightweight, flexible, resilient, and can be easily formed into various shapes. It’s also incredibly durable and water-resistant, making it perfect for humid climates. It’s also available in a variety of vibrant colors, such as yellow, orange, green and purple.

Compared to traditional felt material, PET felt has the added benefit of being hypoallergenic, odor free, and non-toxic. It doesn’t require frequent cleaning or maintenance and is extremely easy to clean. Its open cellular structure also means it can be easily cut or shaped as needed (more on this in a minute). Overall, PET felt offers both environmental and functional benefits. It’s an excellent choice for a wide variety of applications, including as an acoustic solution.

How is PET Felt Made?

How is PET felt made? Typically, plastic bottles are shredded into flakes. The flakes are then heated and melted, which can be done using either a hot air-forced drying method or a steam-heating system. Both processes require precise temperature control so that the PET flakes are heated uniformly. Once the flakes melt, they form a fibrous material which is then pressed and twisted into a felt-like fabric, aka PET felt.

A specialty dye is used to make the PET super colorful and vibrant. However, like all things that require dying, there can be slight color differences between pieces of PET felt. That’s why it’s best to order more than you need to get a more uniform color in case you need additional panels down the road. So, how does PET felt become acoustic panels? What makes it so good for acoustics?

What Makes PET Felt Good for Acoustics?

I love explaining this stuff, so let’s talk physics, shall we? Sound waves can’t be stopped, but they can be absorbed, reflected, and refracted, depending on the material the sound wave is passing through. Additionally, the speed of sound waves can be affected by things like density, temperature, and friction. As a result, sound-absorbing materials can help to reduce the amplitude (volume) of the sound.

PET felt is a porous material that affects sound waves in a unique way. It essentially creates a tortured path where heat is a byproduct of friction. When sound waves go through a porous substance like PET felt, the wave hits the fibers and bounces between the little air spaces between those fibers. It’s like an arrow going through a hay bale. The fibers and air pockets absorb and reflect the sound waves and slows them down incrementally.

In terms of absorption strength, fiberglass is one of the most effective materials available. Interestingly, PET felt can absorb sound as well as fiberglass when comparing a one-inch thick piece of both. However, PET felt products are typically produced at a thinner thickness and more dense. As a result, many people think it isn’t as effective. It is true that the denser something is, the less sound it’s going to absorb.

If you are using a 9mm PET felt product, you can enhance its ability to absorb sound by putting an air gap or spacing it further from a wall to improve its dynamic performance. In other words, air pockets and positioning help PET felt maintain its aesthetically appealing appearance and acoustic properties. It’s all about the laws of physics!

Hexagon Panels For Walls - Do They Work? - SoundAssured

In recent years, hexagon-shaped acoustic panels have gained popularity as an aesthetically pleasing and effective solution for improving sound quality in various spaces. With their unique shape and versatility, these panels have become a favorite choice for home recording enthusiasts, streamers, content creators, and home theater folks.

The question needs to be asked; do hexagon panels truly live up to the hype? In this post, we will take a look at the pros and cons of using hexagon-shaped acoustic panels for walls and evaluate their effectiveness for enhancing acoustics.

Aesthetic Appeal

One of the primary reasons for the popularity of hexagon panels is their visually striking design. The geometric shape adds a modern and eye-catching element to any room. You can mix colors and create cool designs and concept in your space.

Whether you're aiming for a contemporary vibe or a minimalist aesthetic, hexagon panels can be a stylish addition to your space. Additionally, their modular nature allows for creative arrangements and patterns, offering flexibility in design.

Sound Absorption

Hexagon panels, like other acoustic panels, are designed to absorb sound waves and reduce unwanted reflections and reverberations. The felt material converts sound energy to heat with friction.

When strategically placed on walls, these panels can help minimize echo and improve the overall acoustic environment. It's important to note that the effectiveness of hexagon panels is primary in the higher frequency range; this is perfect for echo reduction. However, if you need full frequency absorption, hexagon panels can be paired with bass traps to meet your needs.

Also, the coverage area is important to consider. If you have a severe amount of echo in your room you most likely have a lot of flat, hard surfaces. To reduce the reverberation time to a proper level you will need a decent amount of coverage.

Not sure how much coverage you need?

Versatility and Placement

Hexagon panels offer versatility in placement allowing you to customize the acoustic treatment according to your specific needs. They can be installed in various configurations making it easy to spot treat reflection points.

Depending on your room's characteristics, you can experiment with different panel arrangements to find the most effective solution. It's advisable to consider the size of your space, the position of speakers, and the location of reflective surfaces when determining the placement of hexagon panels.

Combination with Other Treatments

Hexagon panels can be used in conjunction with other acoustic treatments for enhanced sound control. Combining them with bass traps, diffusers, or corner absorbers can provide a more comprehensive treatment solution. Each treatment type serves a specific purpose, and by utilizing a combination, you can target different aspects of sound control and achieve optimal results.

Considerations and Limitations

While hexagon panels offer many advantages, it's important to be aware of their limitations. The main limitation is that hexagon panels mainly absorb higher end frequencies. This can be overcome by combining the hexagon panels withbass traps.

Another limitation is installation. You may not want to ruin your walls by glueing the panels directly to your wall.

If you do not want to leave the walls with residue from adhesive or holes from push pins then your best bet would be the 3M command strips for hanging pictures. These can be peeled off without leaving residue behind on the wall. However, note that 3M command strips cannot be used with all brands of hexagon panels.

Another cool technique is to mount the hexagon panel to a piece of plywood, thick cardboard, or coroplast board with adhesive and then, rest or hang the assembled panel on the wall. This not only saves your walls from destruction, but it also gives you the freedom to move the panels around for sound testing or take them with you when you move. I attached a diagram of what this would look like.

How to install hexagon panels?

Check out the video below showing how to install our easy peel and stick hexagon panels.  Also, folks ask us all the time, can hexagon panels be cut? YES! The felt panels are fairly dense but can be cut easily with a sharp utility knife. You will have to make a couple swipes with your utility knife but the panels cut nice and clean.
