Guizhou Province added 6.98 gigawatts of new energy capacity between January and May 2025, representing a 40% increase compared to the same period last year, according to the latest data from the Guizhou Energy Bureau. As of the end of May, the province’s total installed new energy capacity stood at 34.98 GW, accounting for 35% of overall power generation capacity. New energy is now Guizhou’s second-largest power source, underscoring its growing role in the province’s energy transition and carbon goals.

The surge was driven primarily by wind and solar power. In resource-rich areas such as Qianxinan Prefecture and Bijie City, several large-scale projects were recently connected to the grid, significantly boosting the share of renewables. By the end of May, 400 projects had been brought online across 81 counties, districts, and cities, with another 215 under construction.

Guizhou is also ramping up efforts to develop new energy storage systems. The province has installed 2.445 GW of storage capacity, equivalent to 4.89 GWh, enhancing its ability to balance supply and demand through off-peak charging and peak-time discharging. This capability is key to integrating variable renewable energy into the grid.

Looking ahead, Guizhou plans to raise its total new energy capacity to more than 37 GW by the end of 2025, a 32% increase over year-end 2024 levels. To ensure efficient utilization of renewables, the province is accelerating the development of pumped-storage hydroelectric projects.

An official from the Guizhou Energy Bureau said the province will continue to scale up wind and solar deployment and push forward integrated energy systems combining wind, solar, hydropower, thermal, and storage. Guizhou aims to reach a total installed capacity of 100 GW and generate more than 270 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually by 2025—making a strong contribution to China's national energy transition.
