Yunnan Province has seen its installed capacity of new-type energy storage surpass 4 GW, reaching 4.785 GW, following a wave of newly commissioned facilities. Centralized shared storage makes up 4.355 GW, or 91% of the total.
Driven by abundant natural resources and local development goals, Yunnan has accelerated its shift toward renewables, particularly solar power. The province’s total installed new energy capacity has now topped 65 GW, accounting for nearly 40% of its overall power generation capacity.
To support the integration of renewable energy, Yunnan has introduced an implementation plan for developing new-type energy storage. The plan establishes a “new energy + storage” model and outlines mechanisms for shared leasing, system dispatch, and market participation. Since the launch of the province’s first shared energy storage station in Yongren County, Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture in August 2024, over 20 shared facilities have come online. This rapid expansion marks a leap from initial deployment to scaled, high-quality development—advancing Yunnan’s goal of a coordinated “generation-grid-load-storage” energy system.
