Ningxia recently set a new benchmark in renewable energy integration, with daily output from renewables reaching 354 million kilowatt-hours—accounting for over 56% of total electricity generation. For two consecutive days, renewable generation surpassed the region’s scheduled internal power demand, making Ningxia the first province in China to achieve this milestone.

As China’s first comprehensive new energy demonstration zone, Ningxia had 44.68 GW of installed renewable capacity as of May 2025, representing 59.7% of its total power capacity. The province also ranks among the national leaders in green power exports.

In recent years, State Grid Ningxia Electric Power Co., Ltd. has built a smart grid system designed to support high shares of renewable energy. Through grid expansion, market upgrades, and innovative operational models, the region has made significant progress in both the share of renewable capacity and its actual contribution to the power mix.

On the innovation front, Ningxia has adopted integrated development models such as “renewables + storage,” large-scale project aggregation, wind-solar hybrid systems, cloud-computing base integration, and green power substitution. These approaches have enhanced grid flexibility and ensured that peak-shaving capacity keeps pace with the rapid growth of renewables. They have also enabled more efficient coordination of wind and solar resources, electricity demand, and land use—facilitating high shares of green power supply to energy-intensive sectors such as data centers.
