Every machining facility in the world needs gauges to ensure that their products meet specifications. However, not every gauge is as simple as a straight plug gauge or ring gauge. Many times, a custom gage must be designed and created to measure the part. These special gauges often require the same tight tolerances as standard gauges, but have a unique geometry to fit the part design.
Common plug and ring gauges have standards that must be adhered to. These standards specify tolerances, outside and inside diameters, and overall lengths. While standards are helpful, sometimes part design or fixturing requires a change in gauge characteristics. This can be as simple as adding a gauge length or as complex as spending weeks designing a gauge.

Application of Custom Gauges
Why should engineers consider custom gauges rather than using multiple gauges? Special gauges can eliminate the extra step if multiple dimensions are to be checked. Gauges can be designed to check multiple features in one step. For example, if the size and depth of a hole needs to be checked, a plug gauge with a depth notch will verify the size in two simple steps. If a plug gauge set and depth gauge set were used, the inspector would have to insert four gauges instead of two. While standard gauges are cheaper, purchasing gauges for each size is usually more expensive than custom gauges.

Many gauges are made of carbide because of its hardness and wear characteristics. Because of their hardness, submicron carbide grades do a great job of maintaining precise tolerances and surface finishes. It is the material we use most often, although our equipment can also handle ceramics, hardened and stainless steel, titanium, and many other materials.
